"La Ropa" in Spanish means "The Clothes". According to local legend, sometime in the late 17th century one of the Manila galleons shipwrecked while returning from the orient, and its cargo of silks and fine clothing washed up all along the longest beach in Zihuatanejo Bay. The small population of Zihuatanejo at that time of only a few dozen families of fishermen discovered the clothing strewn along the beach, and the name "la playa de la ropa" or "the beach of the clothes" stuck and eventually became "Playa La Ropa".
Since the time of Zihuatanejo's first visitors, La Ropa Beach has been a place to enjoy the wonders of nature. With its kilometer-long warm golden sand and gentle waves, La Ropa has always offered its visitors a place where they can spend a day of relaxation lazing in the shade of the palms and mangrove trees or cooling off in the calm water. The region's first residents would go by canoe to enjoy the day drinking coconut water and eating red clams. Nowadays there are numerous fresh seafood restaurants offering delicious fare and comfortable chaise lounges.
